Mental Health Occupational Therapy involves providing Occupational Therapy for individuals with mental health conditions whose mental health affects their ability to function as they would like in everyday life.

Mental health Occupational therapists work with individuals with a variety of mental health diagnosis which include:

– Depression

– Anxiety

– Schizophrenia

– Obsessive compulsive disorder

Generally a mental health occupational therapist will start with an Occupational Therapy Assessment. Following the assesment, the Occupational therapist will work with you to discuss the goals around therapy and plan sessions from there.

A mental health Occupational Therapist provides advice and education to individuals to assist them in being able to improve their function despite their underlying mental health condition. 

Treatment provided for every individual is unique and targeted to their unique needs. 

How long does an Mental Health Occupational Therapy Assessment take:
A Mental Health Occupational Therapy assessment generally takes between 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the complexity of each case. Further time is then required for reporting and follow up if needed.

Who requires a Mental Health Occupational Therapy Assessment?
A mental health Occupational Therapy Assessment may be required by anyone with an underlying mental health conditions which impedes their ability to function independently in everyday life. The assessment can provide further information regarding strategies an individual may put in place to assist them to improve their function.

Further mental health occupational therapists can provide information regarding the supports individuals require around them to be able to better live in and take part in society. Many participants on the NDIS with psychosocial disability require an mental health Occupational Therapist to provide input regarding their supports as well as suitable therapy. In some cases mental health Occupational therapists may recommend Supported independent living (SIL) assessments where a participant is deemed to require 24 hour supports.
